Despite nearly universal awareness of contraceptives (99.8%), usage among young people remains low. Only 43% of unmarried, sexually active youth use contraceptives and among teenage girls aged 15-19 with the rate of 12.9%.

Teenage pregnancy remains a persistent problem with a national prevalence of 15.2% in 2024. Regional disparities are evident, Savannah region recorded 26%, Ashanti 24% and districts like Ketu south in Volta region rose from 13.8% (2023) to 16.9% (2024). In 2020 alone, 10,301 teenage pregnancies were recorded in the Central Region and 5,741 in Bono East.

The increasing rate of reproductive health issues needs interventions that reinforce healthy SRHR behaviours through well-tailored strategies including; behaviour change communication interventions, Comprehensive Sexuality Education, SRH service delivery, advocacy, and mentorship, and livelihood skills development. PPAG, therefore, through this project seeks to provide reproductive health education (RHE) using varying activities and provide youth-friendly services to poor and marginalized adolescent girls and teen mothers in these three districts.

Likewise, Peer facilitators will be retrained in age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health information to educate and empower fellow adolescent girls and boys to make informed decisions on their SRH and fulfil their potential in their communities and minimise the incidence of unwanted pregnancies and child marriage as well as other harmful socio-cultural practices that disproportionately affect girls.

Again, stakeholders will have their values clarified and capacity built in SRHR service provision respectful. This will ensure the support of stakeholders towards AG and YW SRHR and also empower these girls to demand their right to services as well.
