The project was aimed at enabling young people to access comprehensive sexuality education and realize their sexual rights including the right choose when and whom to marry within the context of the law. It targets young girls between the ages of 10-19 and was implemented in the Sagnarigu district and the Tamale Metropolitan Area all within the Northern Region.
The project in its quest to empower young girls provided orientation for twenty (20) Sista’s club leaders on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) issues. It also trained some of the girls to be Life Planning Skills (LPS) facilitators and provided 200 LPS materials in the form of manuals and workbooks, penis models etc to help facilitate their LPS sessions.
The project provided over 1,000 free sanitary pads to the Sista’s club members, Young female porters and also provided education and free SRHR services to over 5,000 young girls both in school and out of school. In addition, ‘engage my mentor’ sessions were organized for young girls to be coached on possible career choices and planning for their future.
Worth mentioning among others are two major achievements by this project: the first was the provision of Comprehensive Abortion Care services to one adolescent who was discovered to be pregnant during one of the project’s activities, and the second had to do with putting another adolescent girl on ART after she was discovered to be infected with HIV. Both girls had adequate counseling and are happily schooling.
