Scaling Self-Care and Digital Health Interventions within an integrated package of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Services (2026 to 2028) (SCALE)

In 2021, PPAG initiated an integrated Abortion Self-Care and Digital Health Intervention as part of its response to Ghana’s persistent reproductive health challenges. There was resistance to self-care approaches among some providers, while the high cost of facility-based services remains a significant barrier to equitable access.

Limited access to accurate information and quality abortion services contributes to approximately 30% of disability and mortality cases annually, while also perpetuating the burden of unintended pregnancies (GHS, 2023; WHO, 2022). Moreover, the persistence of these challenges continues to widen gender inequalities, disproportionately affecting women and girls across the country. Recognising these realities, PPAG has committed to scaling its comprehensive response to address the barriers identified.

This commitment aligns directly with PPAG’s mandate to prevent negative reproductive health outcomes and to promote equitable, rights-based access to care. By intensifying its efforts, PPAG seeks to make a transformative impact, especially in the lives of key and vulnerable populations who are most affected by limited access, stigma, and socio-economic disadvantage.

To consolidate progress and avert preventable reproductive health risks, PPAG will scale up its intervention through a multi-pronged strategy that focuses on strengthening digital health platforms to provide user-friendly, reliable, and accessible guidance for self-care. Also, to improve affordability and increase access to comprehensive abortion services for women and girls, particularly those in marginalised and underserved communities.

Through these targeted actions, PPAG reaffirms its role as a leader in advancing safe abortion self-care and as a champion of gender equality. By addressing the persistent barriers, PPAG seeks not only to reduce morbidity and mortality but also to empower women and girls to exercise their reproductive rights with dignity, safety, and autonomy.
